A detailed history of the mission at Mangapouri with emphasis on the relations between the Maori and the missionaries in the pre-European settlement period, as seen by a Church Missionary Society missionary. Also included are day-to-day accounts of journeys in the Waikato-Thames Valley area, of thens at Pahia, Puriri (Thames) and Tauranga, and of the wars in 1836 between Maori tribes in the Waikato-Thames Valley and the Rotorua-Bay of Plenty areas.

The Church Missionary Society was founded in 1799 by a small group of laymen and clergy of the Church of England. It was originally named the Society for Missions to Africa and the East.
